From 15th to 17th October, A4BLUE partners met in Turin, Italy, to analyse the impressive results obtained in the framework of the 4 use cases where the A4BLUE system is being instantiated and validated.
A4BLUE (Adaptive Automation in Assembly for BLUE collar workers satisfaction in Evolvable context) proposes the development and evaluation of a new generation of sustainable and adaptive workplaces dealing with the evolving requirements of manufacturing processes and human variability. For this, A4BLUE is working to introduce adaptive automation mechanisms to help workers in execute their tasks in a more efficient and secure way, as well as to provide them with personalized worker assistance systems including Virtual and Augmented Reality and knowledge management system to support them in the assembly and training related activities.
Within the RWTH use case the A4BLUE solution will be applied to enhance the assembly of electric vehicle prototypes. During complex operations like the assembly of the safety critical brake pedal and the rear light, the worker will be assisted with augmented reality for on-the-job-guidance.
This will be designed to improve the quality of work, reduce the training time needed for new employees, and achieve a high level of usability as this is essential for worker acceptance of the AR-solution.

For the Airbus scenario, A4BLUE will provide a fully traceable quality process improvement for a specific set of assembly personnel including operators, quality supervisors, manufacturing engineers, and process planners. This will be done by introducing a new intelligent system for bolt tightening in hydraulic assembly, involving a Smart Torque Wrench (jointly developed between Airbus and SamOutillage) connected with an Augmented Reality Device (Hololens). Partners are working hard to develop new adaptive workplaces that respond to workers’ profiles and to the changing manufacturing environment. Therefore, The A4BLUE innovations will allow safe human-machine interaction while ensuring efficient execution of tasks. Furthermore, workers will benefit from personalized assistance which will support them to perform manufacturing tasks and training activities through virtual/augmented reality and collaborative knowledge sharing platforms.
In partnership with ILLOGIC and SamOutillage, AIRBUS leads one of the use case scenario of A4BLUE project.
This workshop was dedicated to prepare the Alpha demonstration that will be held in Brussels mid of May for the European Commission. First stone of an amazing project that works on adaptive automation for blue collars introducing technologies like robots, augmented reality, smart tools…First pieces of the puzzle were able to be reached and are presented hereafter.Some others are progressing like for example, the targeted architecture of the scenarios.
The first step reached some weeks ago is the manufacturing of the physical mock-up included real hydraulic flexible and rigid pipes, bolts
This first step was directly followed by the design of the 3D model using Blender to provide 3D digital mockup to Illogic to implemented Augmented Reality stuff.
These two first steps were reached just before this two-day meeting. During this two-day meeting, a first demo of the capability of the Augmented Reality on our physical mockup was proposed by Giuseppe DonVito from Illogic.
After a calibration of the physical and virtual mock-ups done by marker,
the proposed scenarios is to target a bolt by setting a 3-axis display item on this bolt and by a simple finger gesture recognized by the Hololens to untighten and/or tighten the selected bolt
A parallel execution of the double tightening with the DynaSam 4.0 has been tested by Morgan Le-Gac with the support of Maxime Lorimier and Théodore Puntous from SamOutillage
A third parallel session done by the architects and SamOutillage worked on the architecture proposal to assemble these pieces of the puzzle under A4BLUE Framework.
This session was very rich in questioning-answering in a constructive fashioned behavior, helping all actors to understand better the scenario and to participate actively to the success of these two-day by reaching intermediate targets presented above.
We are only hoping to continue this momentum.

Il tema di quest’anno esprime il cuore della mission del Polo: fare squadra come strumento di innovazione, due giornate in cui si succederanno speaker di rilevanza internazionale e la consolidata Vetrina Tecnologica, spazio espositivo e dimostrativo dove aziende e centri di ricerca presenteranno le più recenti novità in termini di know-how e ricerca&sviluppo relativi a prodotti e processi intelligenti.
All’interno della Vetrina Tecnologica, Illogic presenterà il modello Virtual Twin, un prodotto che, attraverso il concetto metaforico del “gemello virtuale”, riunisce le consolidate competenze maturate dall’azienda nell’ambito di Realtà Virtuale e Realtà Aumentata in un’unica soluzione formativa e di supporto a MRO e HSE, destinata a svariati settori industriali. Verrà inoltre allestito un corner dimostrativo in cui sarà possibile testare la Shared Experience utilizzando il device Hololens di Microsoft, ovvero la possibilità di interagire simultaneamente sullo stesso spazio virtuale visualizzato in forma di ologramma come realtà aumentata su uno spazio reale.
